Located in another backwater system, V’Cole has always been a world with potential. It has a breathable, if thin atmosphere, plus plenty of water, and would make a great world for humans to reside on. Indeed, the planet has been the site of several major colonization efforts.
But for whatever reasons, they all seem to fail.
This latest settlement effort is sponsored by an offworld mining conglomerate, which desires a support base for its ongoing prospecting and mining efforts in the system’s planetoid belt. The effort seems to be holding, so far, though there have been continual problems developing the starport; every effort by these colonists to develop the starport have ended in failure, and there is no one specific cause for the failure. First, it was undetected ground instability (they ended up moving the location). Then it was the failure of the newly built power plant; this nearly caused a disaster for the main settlement as well, though a crisis was narrowly averted. And most recently, a “once in a lifetime storm” occurred, leveling the site.
The current residents believe the planet may be cursed, and are petitioning to end the colonization effort, abandoning the planet, and perhaps even the entire system altogether. Obviously the parent company refuses to do so, having invested large amounts of time, effort, and credits into the venture.
