Marko is an unimportant agricultural world with a good climate for farming. With a population around 72 million, the society is concentrated around the planet’s equatorial belt. The majority of the world is uninhabited, with wilderness predominant. Hunting is a primary pastime, and does draw some tourists.
The government has an arrangement with an offworld mining corporation. This group mines the system’s planetoid belt (Orbit 12), which is far too distant for local technology to reach, in exchange for some tax income, preferential treatment at customs and local business, and the like. The government knows the company has the better end of the deal, but they are ok with this, as the government couldn’t stop them from mining the planetoids in the first place. At least this way, they receive some compensation, and a good relationship has been established with the offworld corporation.
