Scatha is a backwater world, located in a system off the main trade routes. To date, the system has been mostly ignored by interstellar traders, corporations, and even pirates.
Though the world has a standard atmosphere and possesses surface water, there is not nearly enough when compared to other, similar worlds, and the predominant climate is arid desert. Scatha still experiences ample volcanic activity, which is responsible for occasional periods of increased dust and reduces sunlight. These factors combine to make growing food on the world “rather difficult”. These factors (weather, climate, lack of water) also, perhaps, explain why the world is ignored by potential colonists.
Around 65% of the world’s population resides within a hundred kilometers of the main city and “starport”, which is located on an inlet of the world’s only large ocean. A convergence of two rivers splits the inhabited area into three “zones”, and separates locals into three distinct societies, or social groupings. There is some disagreement between these groups, though no actual conflict; most major disagreements were ironed out in past centuries.
