Aurlan is a dead world, a moon orbiting a large, dangerous gas giant. The society’s habitats are built on the dark side of the world, deep in the planet’s crust in order to provide protection from the gas giant’s radiation. Being so close to the giant, pilots approaching the world must be aware of radiation levels when the giant is being more “active”; the gas giant randomly generates large storms, throwing greater quantities of radiation into space. Even the society’s hardened systems suffer the effects of these storms, and most systems are triple (or more) redundant.
Visitors to the system may wonder why Aurlan was settled first, rather than the decent (if cold) world just beyond the primary star’s jump limit. The answer is simple: lanthanum. A large deposit of lanthanum was discovered deep in the world’s crust, providing all the impetus needed for settlement. Unfortunately, these deposits are located on the side facing the gas giant, making mining operations… “interesting”. These mines are still producing to this day, though not in the levels previously enjoyed.
The almost “molten” world in the primary star’s first orbit possesses a number of large deposits of other radioactives. Unfortunately, mining operations on this world are predicted to be incredibly difficult, dangerous, and prohibitively expensive at the current moment. The world and its deposits are reserved for future mining operations. Occasional survey and test teams are sent to the world, exploring, surveying, and testing. The world is not expected to be open for operations for at least two decades.
The planet in orbit number three is a cold, but habitable world. The government has set up this world as an agricultural colony, and recreation for its citizens and miners. A small variety of diversions can be found here: hunting, fishing, and the like. It is not nearly as well-known as other worlds with better facilities, but is popular with the locals.
The planetoid belts are being systematically surveyed and mined. There are several small naval outposts scattered through the main regions of these belts, and the system as a whole is patrolled by the government’s efficient, if small and lower tech, navy.
