System of the Week #358 – Glaucus

This is a system I had partly written before the depression really knocked me on my butt for over a year. Hopefully I haven’t horked this one up too bad. lol!

Glaucus is a remote system of little importance. This in spite of its apparent mineral wealth, particularly in the system’s extensive main planetoid belt. Most of the listed population is centered around the large, main “starport”, a glorified landing area of exposed, relatively flat bedrock. This area sits over 150 km away from the main settlements and is a hold-over from the world’s past, when crashes from poorly-maintained cargo vessels was a regular occurrence.
This doesn’t stop smaller ships from landing within the settled area, which is really a group of settlements covering an expansive area in the region’s broken terrain. With local traffic control being essentially non-existent, anyone passing through an area large enough for a ship or small craft must keep their “eyes on the skies”, to prevent a tragedy. Though the system’s traffic volume is “rather light”, the constant transit of miners heading to the belt is an issue, and there are typically one to two minor crashes each standard year.
Although the government is listed as a democracy, in reality few participate in it, and it is an ineffective organization; its only major responsibilities (and capabilities, it must be noted) are support of the settlements’ life support infrastructure. At this task the government excels; there have been no recorded failings of the world’s aging infrastructure in over a century. The same can’t be said for the system’s mining communities in the planetoid belt.

NOTE: These systems, as generated, are generic. Referees will need to modify the system and descriptions to fit their campaign needs.
