Unimportant for the most part, the Vaile system has made a name for itself for its abundant mineral resources. The system’s resources are, for the most part, readily accessible, at least in certain locations, and a number of mining firms are exploiting the easy access to wealth. The system sees significant ship traffic, and a large number of ore carriers arrive in the system weekly.
To support this the starport has recently been improved, adding major repair and upgrade facilities. Previously, all such work had to be conducted at great expense in nearby systems. It is projected this investment will pay itself off within a decade. Pirate incursions within the last few years has also led to the creation of a local patrol. Based at the starport, with major outposts in the system’s belts, the patrol’s new SDB fleet (built out of system with higher technology) is beginning to make a significant impact on recent pirate attacks.
The startown of Vaire is noted for its wild excesses. Miners lead a hard life, and when they get vacation time, they let off steam… This occurs in most systems around human space, of course, but the entertainments to be had here are known far and wide for their boisterous nature. To combat recent excesses the government has increased restrictions on weapons outside of the port, as well as fines for violations. So far this has had little apparent impact on the miners’ fun…

Nobe was settled for the usual reasons – resources. The somewhat unique chemical makeup of this world’s atmosphere and oceans drew scientists for research, and corporations to extract them. The world has never been fully developed or settled; indeed, it hasn’t even been fully explored, and there appear to be untold discoveries of unique lifeforms waiting to be discovered and catalogued, especially in this unique world’s deep oceans.
The small settlement and extraction plants are all located within a few hundred kilometers of one another, centered around the starport, of course. The starport and single city are located on the edge of a small ocean inlet.
The remainder of the system is almost completely undeveloped, though it has been charted for the most part. Small groups of independent miners are prospecting several worlds and moons in the system, looking for that one big strike, as independents are wont to do…

Psoni is a system that has seen better days. A religious movement has taken over the local government. This religion’s belief system has led to an erosion of the world’s technological base, leading to an economic depression for its economy. This tech degradation could have been much worse; fortunately, religious leaders were convinced that further technology loss would result in greater hardship for its people, possibly including millions of deaths. The world’s economy now seems to have stabilized, but it may be centuries before it can recover to anything resembling its former strength.
The belter communities were once part of Psoni’s society. In turn, each broke away from the main world as conditions there worsened. A number of small groups from these belter communities have worked to reduce the suffering of Psoni’s citizens. Indeed, it is at least partially due to these groups’ efforts the world’s religious leaders had changed their stance on technology. It is suspected that some people in these groups, or others like them, are working towards the removal of Psoni’s religious leadership, though there is no direct evidence of this currently.

The world is run by a religious council, one which is currently controlled by aggressive factions of the local religion. If this control is maintained, it bodes ill for neighboring systems, as these factions have been public in their desire to conquer the world’s neighbors – for their god and religion, of course. Never mind the influence of the world’s growing industrial power and its desire for new resources and markets.
Whether these factions can maintain their control of the government is a matter for discussion, as the politics behind the ruling council are known to be intense, sudden, and deadly, with changes occurring on a regular, even weekly, basis. Whatever may occur, the world’s neighbors are nervously watching developments.

Settled in an early human diaspora, Zini’s World has never been of much importance. The world’s very thin atmosphere and hot climate have served to limit interest in the world as a destination for colonization, though adequate quantities of surface water have made it easier for those who have chosen to make their homes here. The world’s thin atmosphere does little to reduce radiation from the system’s large, hot sun, though there is enough of a magnetic field present to keep it relatively safe. Unfortunately, cancer occurs frequently for its residents, and yearly medical checkups are maintained for all citizens. There is ample medical service available for all citizens, though only in the capital city near the world’s starport.
The world has always maintained adequate technological levels, making it easier to live here, though there has never been much in the way of industry. The society is capable of growing or harvesting most of its dietary needs; there are ample aquatic species which are edible by humans, and with preparation it is feasible to grow enough food for the residents. However, luxuries and most machine goods must be imported at great expense.

Ix= 1 Ex= A343 RU= 360 Cx= 3558

Though Spoxu has a low population, the world is somewhat important due to its location on a major trade route. The world’s starport was built up to support the steady flow of traffic, and it also serves as a major trading center for companies, ships, or individuals who do not wish to travel further along the trade route. With such a low population, the world produces little for export on its own.
The government of Spoxu maintains a very small defense force, which is really nothing more than a glorified police unit. This is sufficient for its immediate needs. However, their forces are at times supplemented by units (mainly ships) provided by nearby systems. When present, such forces are used to patrol the outer system, protecting against potential pirate operations.
There are two other settled worlds in the system. The inner world in orbit 1 was settled 20 years ago, with the goal of establishing an agricultural world. These settlers have encountered some issues, which has inhibited the colony’s growth.
The other settled world is the frozen ocean world in the system’s 6th orbit. Though this group claims to be a legitimate colonization effort, in reality it is nothing more than a collection of abandoned ship hulls, which have been bolted together to form a large, free form habitat. It is unknown how this group of individuals (many people refuse to call it a society) is surviving, but they are. There is talk they may be supporting pirates and/or illegal trading, though investigations have provided no evidence of this sort of activity; there apparently isn’t enough ship traffic to this world to support such claims. It is more likely the group supports a small group of independent miners, working the nearby worlds and moons.

The Peridot system is very unimportant, and located no where near any major trade route. The system is a real backwater, with no government in control. The class C starport is located in orbit, while the facilities on planet are rated as “D”, at best. Having any repairs performed here is expensive, ruinously so; ship captains who must utilize the local repair facilities can expect to pay at least triple the normal price for labor. Parts, if they can be found, cost even more. Ship supplies and normal services are better priced, running an average of 150% above regional averages.
Surprisingly, there are few reported issues with pirates near Peridot; it is rumored they have an agreement with several gangs here, and keep their distance. Other rumors state there is nothing here to attract pirates to the area; given the lack of traffic and even lower availability of cargoes, this is much more likely. Even with the apparent absence of piracy problems, the system is still unsafe for most ships and visitors. Warnings are posted in nearby systems, alerting potential visitors of the system’s problems and lack of services.

Grauduse is a very important industrial world. Its efficient factories are known for producing a wide variety of goods, everything from home goods, to massive industrial machinery, to toys. The world is, in fact, known for the extensive variety of popular toys it manufactures and exports.
The world of Grauduse has a slightly higher than “normal” gravity, around 1.15 G. This is reflected in the local population; most of the world’s citizens are slightly shorter than what is considered the human average on most worlds, and are slightly stockier. Though the society does not permit weaponry of any sort, various strength-based martial arts are very popular, with traditional wrestling being the general favorite.
To support its hungry industries, a number of worlds in the system are colonized as mining worlds, including several moons of the system’s trio of gas giants. One local company maintains a profitable mining operation on the icy world in the system’s sixth orbit, extracting a wide variety of chemicals from frozen lakes and soupy atmosphere.

Byorma is an unimportant, low population system on the edge of a main trade route. The world’s four million inhabitants reside in underground habitats, as is typical for such worlds. There are, of course, a number of small domed installations dotting the surface near the main habitats.
Byorma was chosen as the main world for settlement due to its proximity to the star’s jump limit, and the presence of non-surface ice fields beneath the world’s poles. This allows for easy extraction of water and starship fuel. There are several grav rail links between these polar mining settlements and the main habitations along the world’s equator. Because of the world’s low gravity and lack of an atmosphere, grav rail cars are able to attain great speeds, and the trips are relatively short. There are, of course, also side or “feeder” routes connecting to numerous mines and remote stations on the world. All of these settlements and mines are located in the same hemisphere on the world, so these gravitic rails do not cross the entire world.
There are a number of small settlements on other worlds in the system. For the most part these are mining, survey, or research posts.
The system’s two planetoid belts are located in extreme orbits around the central star, and are considered far too distant from Byoma to consider investigating in full. A handful of private prospectors (belt miners) were once operating in these areas, searching for deposits. Unfortunately, these belters have all but disappeared recently; there has been no contact with any of their ships, and no transmissions have been detected. Unfortunately, the government does not have the resources to investigate the situation. It is unknown if these disappearances are due to accidents, pirates, the belters just leaving, or… something else. While accidents do happen, it is highly unlikely every belter would suffer accidents around the same time period, and it is even more unlikely for them to just leave the system without contacting anyone. The situation will likely remain unresolved until the government can spare resources to investigate the region.

System of the Day #348 – Beletseri VII

Ix= -1 Ex= B63(-1) RU= -198 Cx= 8645
——————————
Beletseri VII (commonly referred to as simply Beletseri, or Seri) is an example of what full scale war will do to a system. The system was once made up of dozens of separate governments, most with conflicting viewpoints on a variety of the usual topics: trade, culture, religion, and the like.  While there had been frequent conflicts in the system throughout its history, there had never been a system-wide conflict, until a few years ago.
No one really knows what set this conflict in motion, and scholars will be arguing the point for decades. What is known is the level of devastation it wreaked on the entire system. Much of the infrastructure was damaged or outright destroyed. The system’s technology base was decimated, dropping the economic and industrial capabilities of every society in the system. Millions died.
Every planetary body in the system was inhabited in some form before the war, with the sole exception of the distant frozen planet in orbit 12. Sadly, this is no longer the case. A number of worlds’ habitats or installations were wiped out., notably on the three inner planets (orbits 0, 1, and 2). The society on the fourth planet (orbit 3)  had its main port destroyed; fortunately there were/are secondary ports, which allowed them to maintain necessary supply chains. The fifth planet’s facilities (orbit 5; a mining operation with a once sizeable population) were almost completely wiped out; a handful of survivors remain. The sixth planet (orbit 6) was a smaller mining facility, which was wiped out in the early stages of the conflict. Due to the nature of that world’s atmosphere, no one has yet returned; there are rumors of survivors in the ruins, though no one has been able to check up to this point. The small societies on the gas giant’s moons (orbit 8) also suffered heavy damage and casualties.
Beletseri VII itself once had nearly 30 governments. Almost two-thirds of these have been conquered, absorbed, or wiped out. Only 10 governments/societies remain to hammer out a peace agreement, along with those of the other worlds in system. Its once abundant infrastructure has been reduced to a shell of its former capabilities.
What will occur in the system’s near future remains to be determined. There are serious talks of a permanent peace settlement, and even of a potential unified system government. Unfortunately, everyone involved is preoccupied with searching for survivors, repairing the damage, and making the society function once again. It may be months before the peace talks can begin in earnest.
