It’s been a full year…

February 23rd, 2020. One of the worst days of my life. My dear wife, Lori, passed away after a four month battle with breast cancer, which had invaded her liver. This year has been difficult for everyone, given the current pandemic, but having the love of your life die in front of you trumps almost everything else.
It hurts. It will always hurt. How I’ve managed to hold up without cracking (too much), I can’t say. But as she would have said, “Life is for the living”. It was her favorite saying.

There are a few good things which came out of this situation. My daughter and I have become closer, a little. Lori passed away before the Covid restrictions were set up; we were able hold a remembrance ceremony. She didn’t suffer too much pain, and went quickly once her cancer was determined to be terminal (six days later). And (the least important item) her company’s life insurance policy allowed me to pay off most of the bills, and do some actual needed house repairs and improvements.
I may make or schedule a “System of the Day” post for today. If I don’t, I’m sure you’ll understand.

There are scars from a number of wars, which can still be seen if one knows where to look. During these ‘consolidation’ wars, tourism dropped off significantly, impacting the economies.
There have been no more wars in the past decade, with the last minor governments being absorbed by the “Big Three” within the last three years. To date there have been no actual conflicts between these three governments. Whether there will be one in the near future remains to be seen, though at present there are no significant signs of a major military buildup.
The citizens, who are sick of conflicts, remain hopeful.

Eonwe is a very important industrial world. Known for its dry local environment (there are very few water resources beneath the world surface), water conservation is a major concern. A mostly-automated ice mining operation has been running in the outer system for years; ice blocks are collected in orbit, then sent ‘slingshot style’ to Eonwe, where they are processed. This is the major source of starship fuel, of course (unless a ship captain is willing to make the several days minimum trip to the gas giants in the outer system), and this is reflected in the prices charged – typically 75% or more over standard costs.
Note that these ice shipments also have an impact on interstellar jumps. Several “exclusion zones” have been established over the years, where no ice is sent, making it safer for ships to jump in/out of the system. This system was established after a number of major accidents. The data for these safe zones is updated constantly, with the data being made available to any ship within three parsecs at no charge. Ships jumping into the system are advices to take extra time calculating their jump plots to increase their chances of arriving directly in these zones; the zones are wide, but jump actions are, of course, somewhat unpredictable. The local government assumes no liability for ships which arrive outside (or even within) these safety zones.
This lack of water has also had a major impact on local industries. They are not only extremely efficient using water resources, many have developed alternative techniques and elements when water resources are typically used. This has led to several important and unique industrial developments, which have propelled local industries in the conservation fields.

Kalloo is an unimportant world in an system which is seeing some growth. A sizable mining community has developed in the planetoid belt which orbits the system’s closest companion star in orbit #3. This belt itself is somewhat of an anomaly; normally planetoid belts don’t form in close orbit to stars. It is theorized the belt was formed when an orbiting planet was somehow cracked, probably by a wandering planetary body. This belt’s component planetoids are generally smaller, and orbit the companion star at high relative velocity. This belt was colonized after the discovery of a sizable lanthanum deposit, centuries ago. Though the lanthanum has played out, there are still large quantities of other valuable minerals in the belt.
Kalloo itself has a wonderful ecology and climate, and is a favored resting spot for these miners. Kalloo welcomes the miners and the cash they bring – as long as they behave themselves. Though the “miner’s district” is well-known for its rather boisterous nature, there have been few actual problems.

Aleyin is a currently uninhabited system. Once used by merchants for refueling along a dangerous route (the world once held a class “C” starport), in recent years the facilities were abandoned. In subsequent years it was determined the ‘abandoned’ facilities were being used as a base by large groups of pirates. Once this was determined, naval forces from nearby worlds joined forces, eventually decimating the pirates in a lengthy campaign. After the victory, the old facilities, and anything standing, were destroyed, reducing the chances of the pirates returning to this system to set up shop.
To this day, the system is still visited by naval patrols from nearby worlds, checking to ensure the system remains free of pirate activity.
Aleyin itself is the only known source of fuel in this otherwise barren system. Even the Oort cloud is sparsely populated with ice asteroids (if any Oort cloud can be said to be heavily populated, that is).

With a hospitable atmosphere, plenty of water (some might say a little too much water…), and a steadily growing population, the society is increasing its influence in the local region. The planet’s shallow (for the most part) seas house a great variety of lifeforms, and there are wide undersea expanses of coral colonies which host immense varieties of local life. These coral colonies are being studied by regional universities, and new discoveries are being announced almost every week. These undersea colonies are also a favorite with tourists, and snorkeling is a huge draw, boosting the local economy.
The remainder of the system is, for the most part, ignored. The last completed surveys indicated the potential for a wide variety of resources. To date, however, the outer system remains largely unexploited. The local navy maintains sufficient patrol craft to protect the main world and its tourist trade, as well as the nearby gas giants, but the outer system is left alone; the potential for pirates hiding on one of the many moons is slight, but cannot be ignored, and few dare to venture beyond the system’s pair of well-guarded gas giants.

Affan is a backwater, low tech, tidally locked world of no importance. Though the world has a good climate, the relative lack of water impedes development of the world. Eighty percent of the populace lives around the world’s single ocean, with most being clustered around the capital city. The world beyond this region is dominated by mountains, rough terrain, and deserts, as well as the tidally-locked condition of the world. Most of the world has not been extensively explored, and there are occasional rumors of mineral deposits and other untapped resources, just waiting to be discovered. The small group of prospectors which inhabit this region are hardy folk, ones who don’t take kindly to interference from the government or outsiders.
Due to a history of violence, the government does not allow weapons to be owned. Unfortunately, its ability to enforce this law in the society’s past has been… ineffective, and past administrations had resorted to importing higher technology gear and weaponry to enforce the laws. This backfired, saddling the administration with extensive debt. The government has instituted extensive taxation and import fees to help pay off the debt. Unfortunately, all this measure has done is reduce imports, making life even more difficult for local residents. There is once again growing talk of another revolution, though there seems to be little force behind the movement at present.
