System of the Day #329 – Olvadi

Olvadi is an important agricultural world in the region. Located at the junction of several important trade routes, the world has continued to grow in importance. Olvadi’s starport was long ago improved to handle the fairly large volume of ship traffic which visits the system. This port is run by a neutral agency, charged with maintaining the port, enforcing laws and regulations, an patrolling the system. This agency reports to a committee made up of representatives of the four local governments.
The world has long been divided. Each current government has been in power for centuries, and each rules roughly one-quarter of the world’s surface and population. This division was originally developed from competing agricultural combines, each with differing ideas as to how things should be run. These days, there are few differences between them, and tradition keeps them separated. There has been no call, nor even discussion, to consider merging them into a single, unified government.

What should I ‘name’ the new room?

Hey everyone!
You’ve likely seen the recent posts regarding my basement remodel.
Several of us “geeks” in my circle of friends have a tradition: we name our gaming rooms/dens/lairs. For instance, a close friend has traditionally named his: “Docking Bay 94”.
Of course, I “must” continue this tradition, now that I have a proper (if yet unfinished…) room!
Room Details: It is fairly large: almost twenty feet long, and almost 13 feet wide. It will, of course, soon be filled with various gaming paraphernalia (gaming books, gaming table, 3D resin printer, a 50″ long Lego Super Star Destroyer…) The built-in bookshelf will be black, and have a red stripe running across it. (If you know what this refers to, you are truly an old school gaming geek!) The lower walls on two walls, along with the trim around the windows, will be a darker gray color. And the remaining walls will be lighter gray. Yes, I like gray. It helps other colors and items to stand out. The floors, well, you’ve probably seen the post. Gray.
WHAT SHOULD I NAME THIS ROOM? I am open to suggestions/ideas.
The current favorite is “The Hive”. Since I’m known (tongue-in-cheek) as “The Hiverlord”, this would make sense – but it’s also too obvious. Other ideas have been many and varied (The Pit, Norad, The Nexus, Bellum Locus, The Vault… and the list goes on.
If you have any suggestions or ideas, feel free to leave a comment.
Thank you!
Stay Sane and Safe!

System of the Day #328 – Olorin

Olorin

Olorin is a very important, resource rich world. Although Olorin’s ecosphere is rather poor, the society is not lacking. Seen from space, the world appears very green, owing to the large number of domed parks and farmland. Indeed, even most cities (of which around half are domed) appear green, rather than the typical desert brown or industrial gray, due to the high percentage of buildings constructed with exterior growing space.
Olorin’s economy is rather efficient, and the proud society produces far more material than it can use. Thus the local economy is boosted by the large number of exports to neighboring systems.
Of the system’s two planetoid belts, the closest belt (orbit #4) has long been mined out. The farther belt (orbit #10) has only recently begun to match its production volume of ore output, partially owing to the large distances involved with this belt’s far orbit; the distances between its planetoids is also a contributing factor.

Back In Business – or at least, back in control!

Well, to say I’ve been a little busy/preoccupied is perhaps an understatement.
I poured concrete in the basement two Saturdays ago, and that went very well.
Several days later, after more prep work, I began installing the vinyl floors. That… well, that wasn’t as smooth. In fact, when about 3/4 done, I realized I was doing several things wrong, and had to completely remove and reinstall everything.
Yeah, that was annoying, and a big delay. But being a complete “noob” at this, not surprising, I suppose. It’s a learning process.
Anyway, the second install of the flooring went much better. I should have that part completed tomorrow afternoon. Then comes the usual fun – sheetrock, painting, and the like. Fun times!
Anyway, I have a couple systems rolled up, and will be getting back into the groove of my “System of the Day” project, now that the headaches are under control.
floor

Fun Times in the Basement – and Success!

The last week has been busy, yet productive.

After a week of prep work, and more discoveries (aka problems) we FINALLY poured concrete in the basement, after more than two months of delays. It was a good week.

Problems discovered include bad cable wiring (I posted about that earlier), cut cable wires (my own darned fault, but fixed quickly and easily), and a poorly (to say the least…) framed interior door.

But the concrete is finally poured!

This is the sewer access plug. It was buried/hidden under carpet… I had to craft a frame around it so it wouldn’t be buried in concrete, but it came out perfectly.

The original tile floor. Ugly, damaged, and made with asbestos.

The wet concrete after pouring. You can see color variations due to different mixing times. Also note the aluminum frame around the sewer plug in the upper left corner.

The landing at the stairs.

The end of the landing after removing the barrier I mocked up, inside the utility room/hallway. This was a pain to frame up; we had to remove the entire door and framing – which was done poorly anyway. It will be done correctly at a later time, and it won’t even be that difficult to fix.

All in all, I am tremendously happy with how this has turned out so far. Not bad, for a complete noob with absolutely no experience at this sort of thing. I need to let the concrete cure for a few days, then I can begin to install the vinyl flooring over it. Once this project is complete, I will have one Heck of a great gaming area, with plenty of room.

Now, to get caught up on my online Traveller project…

Well, that wasn’t fun…

Or subtitled, “Oops, Wrong Wire”.
I found some wiring issues during the basement rebuild fiasco. The old cable system wires, and other assorted entertainment junk no longer hooked up to anything, was grounded incorrectly. Last I checked (way back in electrical school decades ago), you aren’t supposed to ground electrical circuits to power line feed cabling (the flexible feed lines used to run and carry electrical power lines in the structure). These, of course, were.
And during removal of said old wires, it seems something was labelled incorrectly – go figure, right? – and I accidentally cut my current cable wire…
Luckily, I have plenty of other wire on hand, and fixed it fairly quickly.
So, yeah. I’ve been a little preoccupied with stupid issues. But they are getting fixed. Meanwhile, my planned concrete pour is delayed yet again…
But I ramble, as always. I’ll be back to catching up on my System of the Day posts here in a day or two.

System of the Day #327 – Zergi

Zergi
B332AE9-C Co Hi Po Climate= C PBG= 131
Ix= 3 Ex= B9B3 RU= 3267 Cx= 7D4E
——————————
Zergi is a world controlled by a religious autocracy. Only the religious elite (and the most devoted supporters) have access to anything resembling higher technology and training, with everyone else (“The Devout”) living in controlled cities, providing labor for The Church and its leader, The Holy One.
Living conditions have always been less than ideal on Zergi, even more so once the population surpassed a hundred million. With over 12 billion now calling Zergi home, conditions are far worse. Though there is a fair bit of suffering, the government (aka The Church) has managed to keep everyone fed. These efforts have been partially paid for by permitting various corporations to mine the systems’ planetoid belts using labor “recruited” from the devout on Zergi. This source of free labor has helped the corporations maintain an excellent profit margin over the years. The profits have also increased recently, as the companies have started to use sub-standard equipment for its operations, especially safety equipment. This fact has not reached Church leadership; it is uncertain what the Church’s response will be if leadership ever determines these facts, and the companies involved are doing everything in their power to keep news from reaching them. So far they have been able to explain the increase in fatalities as substandard training, worker inattentiveness, and the like. How long they can maintain this illusion is unknown.
The settlement in the system’s furthest planetoid belt is a society for the Church’s elite, a ‘paradise’ set up for the most loyal of its leadership. Those who have served faithfully for years are rewarded with access to this garden society. The regular workers here are those Devout who are “rewarded” by being sent to this reported paradise – and never return. Rumors, both in Zergi’s society itself, as well as off world, are many and varied as to what actually happens here.

System of the Day #326 – Tero

Tero
CAA9643-7 Fl Lk Ni Climate= T PBG= 101
Ix= -2 Ex= 8522 RU= 160 Cx= 7455
——————————
The world Tero was initially settled for industrial purposes. It was believed certain chemical combinations in the atmosphere could be utilized cheaply and effectively for various industrial purposes. When the research and surveys were finally completed satisfactorily, it was determined this was a “pipe dream”, and the colony was to be abandoned. The fortuitous discovery of rare gemstone and mineral combinations, however, lured a number of people to remain.
Tero is tidally locked to the system’s gas giant. This effect, combined with the world’s unique atmosphere, can generate fierce electrical storms, especially near the world’s equator where the hot and cold sides meet. Note that there is no “tidal zone” region around the world’s equator; it orbits the gas giant too closely to create a shadow region on the surface.
Tero’s main cities are located in a basin area near its north pole. This basin acts somewhat like a tidal zone, creating a small region which is somewhat shielded from the impact zone’s occasional storms. This basin was created by a planetoid impact in the world’s distant past. The heat and pressure of this impact created a number of gems (for instance, diamonds) which are prospected for sale to industrial combines off world.
To this day Tero, a moon of the system’s single gas giant, is a minor world, barely a stop on the itinerary of most commercial ships in the region. The world’s roving prospectors continue to find rare gem combinations, as well as small pockets of the usual minerals (copper, iron, and the like), generating sufficient cargos to draw the interest of free traders (though not the bigger shipping companies).

Iahamu (generally pronounced “Ya-ha-moo”) is a somewhat important world, even with its low population level and less than ideal living conditions. The society’s higher general technology level compensates for its lack of manpower, and the economy makes extensive use of robotics in non-essential positions; visitors to the world are usually greeted by advanced robotic administrators, for instance, and repair and maintenance bots are a common sight.
Iahamu’s starport is small, but is very well run; its shipyard constructs few ships each year, but is a common destination for ship repairs, maintenance, and upgrades.
Iahamu itself has little actual industrial production, other than some robotics gear and the occasional ship. Most of its commercial effort involves mining the system’s main planetoid belt (orbit #4), shipping ores to nearby industrial worlds.
