System of the Day #16 – Zidruistea

ZIDRUISTEA
C886630-4 Ag Ga Ni Ri PBG= 631
Ix= 1 Ex= 8540 RU= 160 Cx= 1735
———————————————————-
Zidruistea (zi-droo-is-TAY-ah) is an important and interesting world, with a unique cultural heritage.

Zidruistean historians and cultural experts claim the world was settled in the first wave (Diaspora) of exploration and settlement from the mythical human homeworld. While this is impossible to verify, their culture certainly varies from the galactic (human) norm.

First, Zidruistean citizens have, almost exclusively, very dark skin tones. While these tones do, of course, occur widely in other human societies (usually, but not always, as an adaptation to a star’s close proximity), this world’s primary star is not as hot as other G-class stars, which decreases the likelihood of such an adaptation. This fact in itself does not prove their claim, but certainly adds to its credibility. Second, various local place names, proper names, and other words used in the local language have been determined by linguists to be “of rather ancient origin”. Whether this helps their claim or not is difficult to determine.

Regardless of the actual reasons, Zidruisteans claim an ancient heritage, all the way back to Old Arth itself (their historical name for the purported human homeworld), a fact they are proud to proclaim, and discuss at length with visitors. The average citizen here knows more about their culture’s past history than some historians do of their own worlds’.

Zidruistea itself is a wonderful place to live, and visit. The climate is, for lack of a better word, perfect, and supports a productive and varied ecosystem. In particular, the world is known for the quality of its gourds, fruits, and grains. An extensive variety of wildlife makes this garden world’s extensive rainforests a haven for birdwatchers. Few ranches are evident on Zidruistea, as the locals prefer to collect their own meats “the old fashioned way” – via The Hunt.

As with many low population garden worlds, Zidruistea has extensive wildlife, much of it quite dangerous. A rite of passage for this culture’s youth – both male and female, as there is little or no evident sexism in their culture – involves a Hunt and wilderness survival test, using only traditional weapons, the knife and spear. Injuries are commonplace, and deaths do happen. Scars received during this ritual are worn with pride.

A mining corporation from a nearby system has established a small operation in the system’s 4th orbit. They pay a percentage of profits to the world’s government in exchange for these rights. (These proceeds support the local starport.) The government is fully aware of these operations, and makes frequent (if scheduled) inspections.

What the local government isn’t aware of is this company’s extensive – and quite illegal – operations in the next belt (orbit #5). These operations are producing high profit levels for them – profits it hasn’t revealed to the local government. This operation is so profitable (and looks to remain so for decades) the company is willing to risk losing the contract. Company managers keep several patrol craft, including several small warships, near these facilities, and will go to any length necessary to keep the operation from being revealed. Several starships have been reported missing in recent months…

System of the Day #12 – Selegal

This is my 12th hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

———————————————————-

SELEGAL C3109BB-A Hi HZ In Na PBG= 800
Ix= 3 Ex= 48A(-4) RU= -1280 Cx= DC4B

———————————————————-
Selegal is a tidally-locked, mid-tech industrial world. With its inability to grow adequate food for its citizens, the government is forced to import most of it. This has negatively affected the world’s economy, so much so its Dictator, supported by the world’s leading industrialists (who control the government) are considering an expansion into neighboring worlds in order to provide for its 8.9 billion citizens. This would also greatly relieve strain on the world’s industrial complex, improving both living conditions and profits.

Before these goals can be accomplished, however, the world’s starport facilities must be greatly improved. Then a fleet must be constructed. And then a Navy trained. This requires money and resources, something which the system currently lacks. To attempt to facilitate this, the government and major industrialists have established mining operations on several worlds in the companion system. The success of these efforts is, so far, disappointing, and the strain on Selegal’s economy is starting to show (food shortages, worker strikes, and so forth). Outside observers familiar with the situation are speculating as to the long term effects on the system. Several are predicting economic collapse within ten years, while others foresee a common rebellion within that same timeframe. What actually will occur remains to be seen.

System of the Day #11 – Meng-Po

This is my 11th hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

———————————————————-

Meng-Po D34578C-4 Ag Pi Tz PBG= 804
Ix= -1 Ex= 6662 RU= 432 Cx= 76A3

———————————————————-
Meng-Po is a fairly unimportant agricultural world. It orbits a gas giant in the primary star’s habitable zone, and is tidally locked to that gas giant. The world’s wide habitable zone is mainly used for extensive farming activities, dotted by small farming communities and several larger cities.

Meng-Po’s small starport is located at the cold rim of the world’s habitable zone, and actually projects into that zone. Care should be used by visitors to ensure adequate precautions are taken, to minimize exposure risks to the cold environment. This location can also make cargo loading activities “rather interesting” on occasion. An adequate rail system is in place for transportation services, especially for shipment of farm produce to the starport. This rail system does not reach everywhere, however, and travel to the far side of the world (which has some of the lowest population concentrations, and better farmland) can take weeks.

Meng-Po’s hot zone is relatively unexplored and surveyed, owing to high radiation levels from the gas giant. It’s cold zone has been more extensively surveyed, and has several mostly untouched deposits of various common metals (copper, iron, etc).

The rest of the system is uninteresting, and mostly unexplored. A trio of stars, three gas giants, and a single iceball planet. With Meng-Po itself orbiting a gas giant, there is little need (nor desire) to visit the outer system for fuel. The nearest moon to Meng-Po’s gas giant could be a good farming world, but radiation levels are high, and the world itself is subject to massive tidal forces from the gas giant. Volcanic activity, and earthquakes, are a frequent occurrence.

System of the Day #9 – Camollard

This is my ninth hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

———————————————————-

Camollard C551533-5 Ni Po PBG= 310
Ix= -2 Ex= 7442 RU= 224 Cx= 137A

———————————————————-
Camollard is a fairly typical backwater system. Camollard itself has a breathable atmosphere, but is an uninviting world, as it orbits the primary star outside its habitable zone. When combined with the world’s lack of water, Camollard is an unappealing world.

The world’s residents make a living by farming (when the season allows), ranching, some scratch mining for minerals, and sales of furs, harvested by local hunters and ranchers. The meat from several of these animals is also smoked, and is a popular item on nearby worlds. Although water may be scarce on the surface, there is plenty of native and imported wildlife, some of which can be quite dangerous.

For the most part, the residents of Camollard are suspicious of offworlders. They are also known to use an abstract symbolization, which can make navigating around the world “somewhat interesting”. Visitors should exercise caution when travelling away from the main areas.

The remainder of the system is rarely visited. Even the distant, lone asteroid belt is rarely visited by belters, even though rumors continue to circulate, claiming readings of large rare earth element deposits. The belt is considered too distant and sparse, with no local support, to be worth the effort. The Far Companion star holds a pair of iceball planets, and hasn’t been visited in years, as there is nothing of value there.

Note: The two orbits (5 and 13) after the Far Companion in orbit 16 are the two planets for this companion star. The formating isn’t being maintained for some reason, so it’s not as obvious as it should be.

System of the Day # 8 – Vington

This is my eighth hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

———————————————————-

Vington A785622-C Ag Ga Ni Ri PBG= 501
Ix= 3 Ex= B521 RU= 110 Cx= 899C

———————————————————-
Vington is a rich, important agricultural world. Its pleasant climate makes it ideal for tourism, and the world’s high technology makes it easy to attain and maintain high levels of agricultural production. Vington has numerous parks and nature preserves, highlighting the world’s diverse wildlife and beautiful scenery. Little actual starship construction is performed at Vington’s shipyards, as most components must be imported at high cost. Instead, the yards tend to concentrate on maintenance and overhauls. A small, but efficient and well-run local Navy protects the world from attacks.

Vington has “always” had an active participatory democratic government. That’s the official (and popular) opinion. Delving into the world’s history tells a different tale. Several centuries ago the economy and government were controlled by organized crime elements. Only a concerted public effort over several years led to the removal of these groups. Ever since, Vington has had an open society; everyone knows what everyone else is doing, especially their business dealings. This was seen as the only way to keep organized crime out of business and the government. While people from other worlds may consider this “rather excessive”, Vington’s citizens treat it as a normal, and necessary, part of their society.

One side effect of these elements is the process of Social Ostracism. Since everyone is watching everyone else, it is difficult to violate social customs. Once an individual enters the public’s awareness, he/she is more closely monitored (and is usually aware of it). If accepted social customs continue to be violated, the person is put on ‘social trial’; an online public debate is held, and the individual must attempt to justify, defend, or refute the perceived violations. Failure at this defense means the person is Banished from Vington, and never allowed to enter the system again. Outsiders who are aware of this custom may consider the entire process to be excessive, but it works for them, and keeps their society free from outside influence. Which is why it is in place.

System of the Day #7 – Frell

This is my seventh hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020. At this point I’ve made it an entire week without any delays, which is pretty darn good for this geek, lol.

———————————————————-

Frell E7696A6-3 Ni PBG= 704
Ix= -2 Ex= 8510 RU= 40 Cx= 5493

———————————————————-
Frell is an isolated world, sitting an absolute minimum of 52 hours inside the primary’s jump limit at 1G (assuming a perfect jump). Travel times are far more likely to be at least double this. Due to this, the world stagnates in isolation.

Frell has recently undergone yet another government change. Unlike previous governments, usually led by strongmen or thugs, this one was led by a merchant, a shop owner who was educated off world, returning ten years ago after decades of interstellar travel. She has instituted reforms, reduced taxes, and looks to be improving the small government’s efficiency. Corruption in the bureaucracy has been greatly reduced.

Frell itself is a decent sized world, with a single continent and small archipelago. Much of the world’s trade goods are dried fish, minerals, and some rare gems. However, an off world survey company has been hired by the new government to look for other resources. Rumor is they were once business partners of the new leader of Frell, but this is unconfirmed.

Bright, located in the Primary star’s third orbit, is a barely habitable world. Its highly reflective surfaces allow enough heat and sunlight to be radiated back into space, and the thick atmosphere helped shield the inhabitants from radiation. Unfortunately, the heat of the world still approaches unbearable levels. A colony was abandoned within ten years, after nearly 40% of the colonists developed vision problems, with a high number of them suffering permanent blindness. Bright’s spaceport was left in place. Sitting on a small rock island 20 km off the old colony, its current condition is unknown.

Waypoint sits just inside the system’s Jump Limit. It was established years ago by a small out-system enterprenuerial group. It sells refined fuel (at standard cost), as well as providing ship supplies (at a 30% mark up), and basic ship repairs. A pair of fast shuttles is maintained for search and rescue operations. Due to a number of pirate attacks years ago, the local employees are all trained in basic combat, and both shuttles are well armed.

System of the Day #6 – Gulmurn

This is my sixth hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020. All die rolls are made with a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years.

———————————————————-

GULMURN

A110776-F Pi PBG= 233

Ix=2 Ex=A670 RU=420 Cx=59AE

———————————————————-

Gulmurn is an important high tech world in the region. The world is split between five “competing” nations, each specializing in a number of high technology industries. Competition between these nations is “brisk” – a major reason the world has not yet united under a single governing body. This has increased competition, but also reduced efficiency. Surprisingly, little corporate espionage has been conducted over the years; though energetic and fierce, competition between the nations (which are probably better described as corporations) is polite. It is reported that negotiations may be underway to combine the governments, a move which economists and observers say will greatly improve efficiency and reduce prices.

Gulmurn has a starport, complete with accompanying orbital facility, for each government, as well as an ‘open’ starport, where most off-world trade is handled. By agreement, all resources accumulated from the system’s other worlds is sold here, in a frenzied “open air” style market.

Products produced on Gulmurn are generally of high quality and reliability, justifying their overall high costs. Starships produced here are of exceedingly high quality, especially their small craft, and are in high demand, even though they are incredibly expensive when compared to ships constructed at other nearby shipyards.

Although not warlike or expansionist, Gulmurn maintains a sizeable patrol fleet to protect the system’s wide ranging interests, as well as the high trade traffic.

This is my fifth hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020. All die rolls are made with a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years.

———————————————————-

Harge E750100-3 Lo Ho De PBG= 930

———————————————————-

Harge is a hot desert world. It was settled in past ages by various colonist groups. However most found the world conditions too hostile to remain, and departed.

A few small family groups remained on Harge, surviving as only they knew how. They survive as best they can, scavenging for resources, harvesting the few edible, wild plants which manage to survive. There are even a few edible animals, which surprisingly are fairly easy to capture, and can provide much of their dietary needs. Water is extremely scarce, as can be imagined, but it can be found – if you know where to look. They have become quite adept at hiding and disguising the small watering holes they know of.

With fewer than 100 (known) people remaining on Harge, there are the usual problems and dangers – lack of (especially) water, food, inbreeding, etc. Trade goods are difficult for them to obtain, as they produce almost nothing, and there is little of value in areas they can easily reach.
The few people on nearby worlds who are aware of their precarious existence would provide assistance – if only the locals would accept it; they are fiercely independent, and ferociously paranoid. When these facts are combined with other factors (lack of trade resources, no easy source of starship fuel, etc), it may only be a couple generations before this small society dies out.

System of the Day #4 – Oulea

This is my fourth hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020. All die rolls are made with a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years.

———————————————————-

OULEA

A652599-B Ni PBG= 430
Ix= 1 Ex= 846(-3) RU= -576 Cx= 463A

———————————————————-

Oulea (pronounced Oh-LEE-ah, officially, but usually called Owly by most residents) is a fairly dry world. In the past Oulea was a prosperous world with a thriving economy. Within the last few decades, however, the planetary elite, consisting of the most prosperous business owners, have become jaded and wasteful spenders, and the world’s economy teeters on the brink of disaster. They have used their positions of power to raid the world’s once sizeable treasuries, spending excessive amounts on ‘public projects’, the proceeds of which have never benefitted the world’s public one bit. The world sits on the brink of rebellion, and only a sizeable police force, enhanced by outsystem mercenaries and the threat of martial law, keeps the population in check. Oulea’s starport, both the Downport and its associated orbital facility, are beginning to show signs of neglect due to budget cuts. Visitors to the system are advised to be prepared for potential breakdowns at any time.

The mining efforts in the nearby planetoid belt of the system’s 3rd orbit have been enhanced by the addition of political prisoners. They are sent to various large planetoids, where valuable minerals are extracted. Conditions for the prisoners is rumored to be very harsh, and numerous deaths have been reported. It is, at this time, unclear whether these deaths are being caused by the mining conditions or overzealous security personnel.

The miners in the next belt out [orbit #4] have always been rather independent, moreso since the troubles have increased on Oulea. A recent expedition from Oulea, sent there to bring “law and order” to the independent miners, met with disaster, suffering 40% casualities. Government officials have declared this area as “off limits” to all traffic, and are attempting to enforce martial law. Government negotiators have been seen in nearby systems, and it is suspected mercenary units are being hired.

Icestation (Orbit #5) is a scientific research station. The government of Oulea at one time sponsored research here, exploring the world and examining its potential for colonization or exploitation. The government has, however, cancelled the funding, stating the funds were needed for, “projects of greater public need”. This was around the same time the world’s economy started to decline. The departing scientists left various sensors and data collectors operating, scattered across the world’s major continent. Someday soon, someone will need to gather the data before the equipment begins to malfunction.

Note: Orbits 8 and 9 are Empty, except perhaps for a few undiscovered/uncharted planetoids.

Note: The Iceworld in Orbit 10 has only recently been located. It has never been surveyed up to this point.

System of the Day #3 – Sutarilia

This is my third hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020. All die rolls are made with a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years.

Sutarilia is a world which could be of much greater importance in the region. However two factors have kept this from occuring: the local environment limits growth and development (the population has hovered around 45 million for several centuries), and the local starport needs upgrading. There isn’t even an orbital facility, though there are a number of shuttles available for ships which cannot make the landing.

Sutarilia is known for its small, but energetic and efficient workforce; if the starport facilities are ever improved, the world is predicted to become a regional center for specialty starship construction. However, no outside agency or company has stepped in to provide funding or backing, and world leaders continue to struggle to improve local conditions.

New Sutarilia is the IceWorld in the system’s 9th Orbit. A century ago a group of colonists received backing to establish a colony. Unfortunately it did not take long for local conditions to prove too extreme, and the colony was abandoned within 10 years of its founding. Little remains of the settlement; clusters of thick, low-slung snow-draped structures, the tracings of a failed mine, a collapsed, offshore oil derrick.

Of interest from this failed colony: several groups of colonists reported possible sightings of large aquatic beasts. While this isn’t unusual for a frozen world with over 75% (frozen) ocean coverage, what is unusual is the animals themselves; colonists reported these sea dwellers as having strange behavior patterns, and some speculated they were intelligent. However most officials scoffed at the claims, stating the group was making up stories to generate more funding, and the claims have been mostly forgotten.
