A minor world, Zhi-Nu is ruled by a government which was formed specifically to prevent significant tampering with the local environment. A garden world, Zhi-Nu has a diverse ecological system, much of which is compatible with human lifeforms. There are few settlements on Zhi-Nu, all being located on a single island near the equator. This location is subject to frequent storms, making the locals’ lives “rather interesting”, but this was the only location on the world which was sufficiently remote; it is over 2000 km from the closest land mass, other than a scattering of rocky islands.
Few people are permitted on Zhi-Nu outside of this island, being restricted to specific areas under constant escort; these are almost always groups of scientists. Rules of conduct, permitted actions, and the like, are strict, and strictly enforced. The world is ringed by satellites, and a small ‘fleet’ of small craft patrol approaches to the world. Enforcement is strict; vessels have been shot at, shot up, and shot down, for violations. Penalties are harsh, with execution being a frequent result.
This strict enforcement has raised questions, and created rumors. What is being protected? Those few who have been allowed access to the world note there appears to be nothing out of the ordinary on Zhi-Nu. Yes, the life forms are somewhat unique, and the environment is almost pristine, but there seems to be nothing that would warrant such extreme precautions. The reason certainly is not some valued mineral resource; the entire system is lacking in those ore deposits necessary for a thriving industry. Another question which has been asked is, How is all this enforcement being financed? Almost nothing is produced here. Starship fuel is inexpensive; refined fuel isn’t available, but unrefined fuel is cheap, available at 50% of standard regional costs. Officials state fuel prices are kept deliberately low to discourage starships from refueling in the local oceans. This has been confirmed as being effective, as few have attempted this illegal action. Of course, this may also be because all ships attempting it have been shot down…
The only other settlement in the system is a small colony of isolationists. Located on the furthest ice world in the far companion stellar system, no one has heard from this group in years. While this lack of contact is not unusual for them, it is the longest period of time they have gone without contact. There have been no known visitors to the world, though close watch isn’t kept. These is growing concern by some individuals that these settlers could be having issues, and there could soon be an effort to investigate the matter. This is a potentially dangerous undertaking, however; they have been known to attack those who visit them without invitation.
